Lending a hand to those in need during the holiday season

Feeling pressure for community service hours, students see volunteering as an obligation or requirement to stay in clubs to boost their college resumes. However, these volunteer opportunities result in beneficial advancements for the community, especially during the holiday season.

Treasurer of Interact, Alana Walker ('21), works to preserve a positive outlook on volunteering within the student body. Last month, the club organized their yearly canned food drive to feed families that could not afford Thanksgiving dinner. Interact is upholding this momentum of serving others by offering more opportunities to members of the club with events occurring every weekend in Dec.

"I hope to encourage students to get out into the community and to learn about the different people in the world. By creating different opportunities for students, I hope to share with them my love for helping others which hopefully they will continue to share with others," Walker said.

Julia Walter ('21) is one example of a student who truly enjoys helping others. She understands it may be difficult for families during the holidays, so she makes an effort to make the season as special for others as possible. She reflects on past memories in which she was able to achieve these goals.

"Helping others during the holidays means a lot to me because knowing that even one person can benefit from my volunteer work. When I volunteered at the Trinity Medical Center, visitors often went out of their way to thank us for what we did. It really put into perspective how the small things go a long way when you help someone," Walter said.

One way to become involved in the community includes Pack-a-Sack. They help others by packing weekend lunches for students in the area by those that rely on school-provided lunches during the week. Contact an officer from Students for Service to participate.
